BONE AND HORMONAL HEALTH IN OLDER MEN AND WOMEN WITH EPILEPSY

Purpose: To find out about how epilepsy medications affect bone health in people with epilepsy.

Inclusion criteria: Age 50-70, at least 5 years post-menopausal if female, not receiving hormone therapy or therapy for osteoporosis, taking one or more of the following medications for epilepsy: Dilantin, Tegretol, Lamictal, Keppra, Neurontin, or Lyrica

Study participation includes a 24 hour urine collection to be done at home, and one appointment of approximately 3 hours where questionnaires on diet and exercise will be completed, blood will be drawn, a urine sample will be taken, medical and seizure histories will be reviewed, and subjects will have a bone density test (DXA) and CT scan of their wrist and heel (pQCT).
